How to Maintain Your Motorcycle Chain Like a Pro
The drive chain is the literal heartbeat of your motorcycle's power delivery. Yet, it often endures the most abuse while receiving the least attention. A well-maintained chain can last over 25,000 km, while a neglected one might fail before 8,000 km.
Step 1: The Deep Clean
Don’t just spray lube over old grease. Use a specialized chain cleaner or kerosene and a Grunge Brush to scrub away the grit. Gritty residue acts like sandpaper on your O-rings.
Step 2: Lubrication for Longevity
Apply lubricant to the inner side of the chain loops. Let it "tack up" for at least 30 minutes before riding to prevent "fling-off". Waxes are great for dry areas, while wet lubes work better in humid conditions.
Step 3: Tension and Alignment
Incorrect tension leads to excessive wear on the countershaft sprocket and output shaft bearing. Always check slack with the bike on its wheels, not a paddock stand, unless otherwise specified in your manual.
